Children Must Wonder

Happy Children Playing Kids

Innocent Looking Children Having Fun

Living life with an open mind

seeing it with a childlike wonder

and feeling they can handle

anything that comes their way

alone or with the help of others

Living in a world that has

both good and evil living side by side

neighbours not always getting along

streets where violence and gangs exist

countries that fight against each other

Living where parents don’t always agree

brothers and sisters pitted against each other

children brought into the world unwanted

homes needed for battered women

food stamps and food banks required

Living where innocence is lost

when children’s brains develop differently

some do not get hugs and guidance

basic needs are neglected by others

children must wonder why is this happening to us

Christmas Means Love

The Christ child was born in a manger in a

small place in Bethlehem.

Even if you question that this really happened,

you know it happens every day.

A child being born, sometimes in poverty

no father present, unwanted, unknown.

The love the mother has for her child

is a metaphor for all of humanity loving itself

Accepting that love is the answer, not that it’s simple

because it is not always that way-it can be complicated.

The best of humanity is brought forward in its

embrace for the vulnerable, the weak, the newborn.

Christmas raises awareness for people that

love is needed, love is the answer, love is all-encompassing.

What does Santa put in children’s stockings today?

Stockings on a fireplace mantel.

We were warned that we would

get coal if we were naughty

or  rabbits’ buttons!

Back then we got very little

but it still made us happy

Socks were not tightly full

of hard candy, grapes wrapped in brown paper

We cherished each mouthful

we slowly chewed or sucked on

Some nuts, an apple and orange

and if we were really lucky a chocolate bar

We’d open our stockings quickly

and peer inside, then remove one item at a time

In later years we got a can of pop too

and boy, were we happy with that drink!

I wonder what Santa Clause puts in stocking today

all hung up around the propane or wood fireplaces

Ipads and iphones and Turtles or Quality Street

Blackberries and laptops and Wii s-all such coveted items?

Once a ten year old told me he got a ski-doo

with all the gear to keep him warm

But you can’t put that in a stocking that

is only 40 cm long and 20 cm wide!

I am going to keep wondering until I find out

what  Santa Clause puts in children’s stockings today.

Addicted To Life

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we

were addicted to living?

That we valued our interactions

with each other above all else

That we explored the landscape

to enjoy every flower, wave, stone

That every moment of our lives

enriched our feelings and thoughts

That manmade things always

meant less than living things

That joy could be found in

the smallest events and moments

That living life to the fullest triumphs over

trying to kill ourselves with food, drugs, alcohol

I place the angel on the tree

Lately I’ve been reading about angels

Many people do not believe in them

There are all sorts of angel items in stores

If few people believe there are angels

why are there so many items with angels sold?

I placed my angel ornament given to me by a friend

on my real tree not to beautify the tree but to show the angel off

The tree is not enhanced by the cheap angel from China

nor the angel enhanced by the tree

They coexist mostly in my mind

a gift from a friend and a gift from nature

Isn’t that what really matters

what exists in our minds?
